How To Look Like You Know What You’re Doing At The Gym

This is it, the moment you’ve been dreading. You walk into the gym filled with people stationed at workout machines, running in flawless form on the track and swimming insanely fast laps. Who are you to compete? You don’t even know what these machines do, and it’s not worth the staring for you to find out. Well fret not!  We are here to help you get fit, feel confident, and look like a pro at the gym. Trust us, everyone starts somewhere, and odds are all of these gym rats have been in your sneakers before. Check out these tricks for looking like you know what you’re doing at the gym.

Choose The Right Outfit

A big part of being able to strut into the gym looking like a regular is as simple as choosing the correct attire. You don’t have to be the person whose tennis shoes, running pants, tank top and bag are all color coordinated, but it does help to actually own some workout apparel. Running tights (or shorts) in really basic colors like this are easy to find. Pair that with a fitted tee or tank top and some sweet running shoes and you’re good to go. You don’t have to order from Fabletics, but baggy sweats and oversized t-shirts aren’t going to make the cut. Not only would that be uncomfortable to do anything in, but it kind of looks like you don’t ever leave your pajamas. (Which let’s be real, would be amazing.)

Do Your Research

Before you head to the gym, it’s a good idea to have a game plan. What do you want to work on today? There are tons of workout ideas online, so check out online magazines like Fitness Magazine or even Pinterest for inspiration. Once you know what kind of workout you want to do, figure out what kind of machines (if any) you’ll need. Most workout machines will have instructions on them, but we are trying to look like pros here. Online videos are really helpful so you can see exactly what to do, and how to do it safely. Figure out what you are going to work on and learn how to do it before you get to the gym. That way you don’t waste any of your actual workout time Googling what the hell a Russian twist is supposed to look like.

Don’t Just Talk The Talk

This isn’t exactly a secret, but the best way to look like you know what you’re doing in any situation is to be confident. You have to walk the walk. Ever heard of fake it till you make it? Yeah, that definitely applies here. Strut up to that machine with confidence, give it some side eye and do your thang! Most of the people at the gym really don’t know much more than you do, they’re figuring it out as they go too. The more you bother to show up, the easier it will become and the more knowledgeable you’ll be. How does anyone learn anything? With practice. Get out there with your game face on, your routine memorized and rock a bangin’ outfit. You so got this.
