As college students, anything that saves us time and money is instantly going to catch our attention. Our mood can be decided simply by what outfit we choose to cover our bodies with each morning, even after spend two hours looking through all of the clothes we own and screaming “I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR.”
Before we get to the point where the oversized sweatpants and messy buns emerge, our many pairs of black leggings and that white v-neck t-shirt we’ve owned for years somehow find their way out of our closets and onto our bodies. There is so much you can do to switch up an everyday outfit based off the basics, just by adding a few staple pieces that everyone should have in their closet.
Look #1: Casual & Cute
A denim shirt is something that can quickly and easily go wrong, but as long as you don’t channel Britney and Justin circa the 2001 VMAswear with head-to-toe denim, should be fine. By rolling up the sleeves and wearing the shirt open, this look instantly adds a little structure to that plain, white tee and those everyday black leggings.
You can also never go wrong with your favorite pair of sneakers. Whether you rock your classic black Vans that you’ve owned for an embarrassing amount of time or the brand new pair of white Converse you bought right before school started, a basic sneaker keeps the overall look super low-key, but still stylish. With a look as simple as this, you do not want to go overboard on the hair and makeup either. Keep it simple with straightened side-parted hair, a little mascara and some tinted lip balm to tie it all together.
Look #2: Try Not-So-Hard
You can never go wrong with a classic riding boots–and-cardigan combo. Everyone likes to be comfortable, right? An oversized maroon cardigan goes perfectly with the black and white in these basics, and offers just the right amount of color and warmth for the transitions between seasons. The brown riding boots add the preppy feel while still keeping it classic. If riding boots aren’t exactly your cup of tea, you can add any kind of earth-toned boots to make sure you stay warm and cozy. The number one important thing that’s make this look that much more adorable is a chunky side braid. Side braids look put together and make it look like you actually tried, but in reality, you threw it together last-minute as you were walking to class.
Look #3: All Black (and White) Everything
Black and white are two of the most worn colors for anyone this time of year. You can match almost anything with black and white, including, well, more black and white. Add a simple black cardigan and a pair of studded black ballet flats to any outfit. The simplicity in this not only gives you the look of immediate sophistication, but it also allows you to spice things up a little bit with your hair and makeup. A loose topknot is always a good choice when you want to get your hair out of your face, and balances out a bright lipstick with that “I woke up like this” vibe.
Look #4: Badass in Plaid
A classic plaid shirt is something that everyone needs, hands down. This black and red checkered plaid shirt can be worn open with the sleeves rolled up, or even around your waist to add a little grunge for those warmer days. When paired with your favorite black combat boots and some killer red lips, you are sure to turn some heads. The “badassery” of this look is also hell intimidating. Not only can you wear this look anywhere, it’s perfect for the days where you want to show everyone who is boss. Add your favorite snapback or band beanie for extra fierceness. This look is perfect for those “I woke up 10 minutes ago” days, but you still have to dress to impress.
All four of these looks can be achieved with things that you already own, which not only saves you stress from the daily outfit-searching struggle, but also can keep some cash in your pocket for more important needs, like food (because pizza, obviously). Keep your closet full of basics and staples and you are sure to have other fashionistas looking to you for inspiration. Now the only question you’ll be asking yourself is “Which pair of black leggings do I want to wear today?”
