Models have officially crossed over from runways, editorials and street style to the sphere of social media, television and tabloids. Instead of being photographed at the end of runways by prestigious photographers, models are now captured through the lens of the paparazzi. With the rise of social media, our own worlds are starting to revolve around models like Kendall Jenner and the Hadid sisters, those that started out in the entertainment industry instead of the high-fashion world.
We all know Kendall Jenner, who is featured on “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” and a member of the Kardashian-Jenner-West clan and the other half to sister Kylie Jenner. Trending right alongside her is the Sister-Sister model duo Gigi and Bella Hadid, previously featured on “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” with their mother (and former model herself), Yolanda Foster. The Hadid sisters have made more than a name for themselves in the fashion industry and on social media. At just 20, Gigi has gained 8.3 million followers on Instagram while 19-year-old Bella has a staggering 3.1 million. Kendall Jenner takes home the prize with 51.7 million followers [on Instagram].
These socialites-turned-models are in high demand in the fashion world. Each one of the girls has appeared in prestigious shows from Chanel to Tommy Hilfiger to Balmain, Elie Saab and many more. They now have the audience at runway shows glossing over other models in search of Gigi’s blonde hair and arched brows or Kendall’s lean legs and pursed lips. Besides the obsession of the models on the runway, many magazines from Seventeen to Vogue are labeling the girls as trendsetters. Industry trend reporters set out to observe and imitate Jenner’s classic sporty look, Gigi’s classy yet casual ensembles and Bella’s macabre aesthetic. As the faces of Guess, Estee Lauder, Givenchy, Maybelline, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein and many others, these girls have proved their talent within the fashion industry and as household names. With the help of the media, Jenner and The Hadid’s are on their way to becoming the next Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford or Tyra Banks.
The infatuation with models perhaps correlates to the world’s obsession with entertainment that’s so prevalent today. Social media and television follow us everywhere and we are sucked into our tiny phones screens, which offers an entertaining world right at our fingertips. The Jenner and Hadid’s relationship with fashion and social media has us on the edge of our seats, staring into our iPhones as if we’re back in 8th grade, Facebook stalking the popular girls in high school to see which kind of cool parties they’re going to next. They are beautiful, successful and loved. Some people even want to be them.
Our need to be constantly entertained leaves us pining for the entertainment in other people’s lives when we don’t have any. Their drama becomes ours and suddenly we are infatuated. Thanks to social media, beauty standards are transforming due to the easiness of looking at a beautiful face on Instagram and saying “I want to look like that.” And thus, models become socialites, trendsetters and the new beauty standard.
From being featured in ads and editorials, models are now featured on the covers of magazines next to Miley Cyrus and Fifth Harmony and are instantly verified on Twitter. Not only are pop stars and actresses leading the way in fortune and fame, but models are running right along side them with the help of our Instagram feeds. As long as Jenner and the Hadid’s are strutting down the runway in Chanel tweed jackets, we will still follow and retweet them in hopes of getting in on their charmed lives.
